It is popular in many circles today to look at religious teachings and say: “Hey, this is actually just psychology, it’s like, uhh, the id and the ego and stuff.” They perform a simple inversion of theology wherein God becomes a figment of the mind and not vice-versa. I am not hostile to these people because I understand where they are coming from and in all honesty that is the sort of thinking that began my journey. But I have come to realize that the basis of their hypothesis is false. The idea that the human psyche lies at the center of godhead is as fundamentally flawed as is the idea that the earth is the center of the universe, and just like geocentrism was the result of misguided humanocentrism, the view of the individual as the center of spirituality is a result of the same poisonous atomization which has already destroyed too much of our spirit.
Anyway, now that you understand that you are not the center of anything, we can discuss what “you” is and how it relates to the Gods. Think of how, technically, atoms are not actually touching each other but hover at various distances and are molded into their forms by the work of all sorts of invisible forces such as gravity and magnetism and probably some other stuff. And think of how you too have a form which is also subject to these forces. Even the human brain is a physical nest of forms, a fleshy tangle of synapses through which electricity pulses like little people in a waterpark. Consider how, at the bottom of everything, the very same protons, neutrons, and electrons make up the entire world but are differentiated at the atomic level by their number and relation to each other within an atom, and how they are held in these positions again by invisible forces.
We see therefore that all material is defined and differentiated not by its physicality but by the relationships of its elements to each other. If you come to understand your human form as grand alliance of particles held together by invisible gravities that you cannot even understand, perhaps you will also realize how foolish it is to believe that you are at the top of the “food chain”. Just as your body exists only at the mercy of your own electrons holding together in a very particular order, so too does the physical universe exist at the mercy of the Forms - the immaterial schematics by which all physical elements have their relationships to each other determined.
The Forms may not be sentient entities, but just as your own mind creates the particular ordering of particles around your fundamental daemon, it is easy to see that incomprehensibly high consciousnesses are responsible for the existence of the Forms.
For millennia scholars and mystics have made it clear that the human self, the “I,” is not itself a Form but rather a nexus through which the creating consciousness probes the ocean of forms which it has set in motion. This is the basic precept which allows for religious experience. If the human minds turns itself towards itself and learns to sense the progressive lack of matter and shape the deeper and higher it looks, it becomes able to conceive of the completely timeless and non-contingent being-ness of the God to whose series it belongs. This then leads to the ability to follow the example of that God, which leads to (re)unification with the God - to return to my earlier comment on the “food chain,” It actually is possible to “become” a god, but it will not be YOU becoming that god - it will be the God returning your mind to its home within himself.
